Steinhaus am Auerbach, Germany, by Arnhard und Eck Architekten

Behind the timber-panelled facade of this getaway lies 80-centimetre thick masonry walls, lending it the name of Steinhaus, or Stone House.

Situated in the winter sports resort of Oberaudorf, the home features cosy interiors that have been painted comforting shades of teal blue or slate grey. Guests can also make use of its sauna, reading room, and large wood-burning stove.

Steinhaus am Auerbach

At first, you might be slightly surprised by the name: “Steinhaus (stone house) am Auerbach”. This Steinhaus in the Bavarian town of Oberaudorf looks like a wooden house from the outside, but is in fact a massive stone building with 80cm thick walls. Thanks to its timber cladding, however, it blends in perfectly with the surrounding houses. Christine Arnhard and Markus Eck are masters at building on small surface areas with unusual spatial concepts – as they proved beyond question with their previous project, the “Holzhaus (wooden house) am Auerbach”, with which the Steinhaus shares the property. Once again, the building’s floor plan is far from standard.

The parking space is located in a “cut” corner of the house, behind which the entrance area opens with a glass-panelled front. The bedrooms are on the ground floor together with two bathrooms, a sauna and a reading room complete with a fireplace. Under the roof you will find the living room, as well as the kitchen with a dining area and access to the large roof terrace. The interior design – with linoleum floors, and solid wood and clay-plastered walls in muted colours – creates a quiet, relaxed ambience.
